WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Downriver Central Animal Control rescued several baby squirrels from a tree after after a neighbor noticed that the mother was injured.

It all started with Katie Halcomb, from Wyandotte, called animal control on Tuesday and said that a squirrel her family has come to care for and feed for two years was hurt with her back legs not working.

An animal control officer responded and sadly told Katie that the squirrel was not going to make it and it appeared the squirrel fell out of a tree and suffered a spinal injury.

Katie then told the officer she thought the squirrel had babies, or was about to, because she knew a hole in the tree. The officer got a neighbor's ladder and climbed up, shined a flashlight inside and saw four little sets of eyes looking back.

Because the hole was too small, the officer used grilling tongs to safely remove the baby squirrels.

Animal control took the four baby squirrels to a wildlife rehab center where they will be cared for until they can be released into the wild again. Katie was told they'd be brought back to the same tree.

Dave Shalda, another neighbor, took the photos out in front of his house.
