A 14 year veteran of the Detroit Police Department is fighting for his life after being shot in the forehead by James Ray, 46, police say.
Around 10:45 Sunday night, the officer and his partner were knocking and kicking on the main door of an apartment building on Joy Road near Wyoming where they were told a woman was being assaulted.
Police say Ray was not connected to the domestic violence situation that was reportedly taking place in another unit, but video from a surveillance camera shows him coming out of his second floor apartment and walking down the stairs to the main door, while chambering a round in his handgun.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig says Ray opened the door with his gun poised to shoot and that he did just that.
A round struck the veteran officer in his forehead. His rookie partner fired back at Ray, killing him.
Detroit Police have asked that we not release the identity of the officer, who was left in critical condition after two surgeries Monday.
We're told his family is by his side. The officer has three children ranging in ages from 7-years-old to 22-years-old.
