DETROIT (WXYZ) — A good Samaritan driver was critically injured Sunday when stopping to help a dog that was running loose on I-96 in Detroit. Now police are looking for the driver who fled the scene after hitting the victim.
The incident happened around 3:40 p.m. on westbound I-96 at Livernois.
The driver, a 27-year-old man from Livonia, stopped and attempted to save the dog. The dog was then hit by a vehicle, and another vehicle struck the good Samaritan, according to preliminary information from Michigan State Police.
Drivers on the freeway stopped and performed CPR on the injured driver. When troopers arrived on the scene, the victim had a pulse and was breathing before being taken to a hospital by EMS where he is listed in critical condition.
The status of the dog has not yet been released.
As of Sunday afternoon, westbound I-96 at Livernois remained closed as police investigated the scene.
