DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is urging Detroiters to get their flu shots this year.

Duggan says the shot is necessary, especially now that the city has done an "extraordinary job" in getting the city's COVID-19 infection rate to among the lowest in the state.

Citing his time as head of the DMC, Duggan says every year that he ran the health system, their hospitals would be full of flu patients.

"As bad as COVID was last month, it would have been worse had it hit a month earlier," Duggan says.

Duggan says he didn't use to get the flu shot, but that changed when he was at the DMC.

"I have not gotten the flu in 16 years," Duggan says. "Flu shots work."

Duggan got his flu shot at today's news conference.

He promises they will be making announcements about programs to help Detroiters get the flu shot in the coming weeks.
