It is time to go back to school. That means kids need supplies, but not all families can afford backpacks, paper, and pencils. Educare Student Services decided to take action to help.

Hussein Hachem is founder of Educare Student Services, a tutoring business in Dearborn. He values education.

“Today’s student is tomorrow’s leader,” said Hachem.

So it made sense that he would start the “We got your back” Backpack Drive. He and a team of volunteers reached out to community service groups and schools. They found more than 400 kids in need in Detroit, Dearborn, Redford, and Inkster. The goal now is to fill backpacks with supplies for all those kids.

The effort is made up of volunteers from all backgrounds, helping kids of all backgrounds.

“The idea is to build bridges between different communities, different ethnicities, religions,” said Hachem. “With all the hatred going around right now, it is really important to send a message of love.”

One man helping to send the message is Abe Hachem, who owns Midwest Recycling. His company bought supplies for 200 backpacks.

“I see there are a lot of kids who need a backpack, who cannot afford a backpack,” said Abe Hachem.  “I encourage everybody to help kids if they can.”

La Pita Mediterranean Restaurant announced it would donate 50 backpacks to the cause.

If they surpass their 400 backpack goal, they will sponsor kids at more schools in need around metro-Detroit.
