Michigan wildlife license plates will be getting a renovation beginning Dec. 1 when the elk will replace the common loon on the state plate.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the change will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the reintroduction of elk in Michigan.

“We are excited for the changing of the guard,” DNR Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason said in a release. “The loon license plate has had a long run, and helped to raise over $2.6 million for wildlife habitat since 2006.”

In 1918, seven elk were brought from the western part of the country to Wolverine, Mich. The elk population in the state now is a result of what the state says is intentional land management and increased law enforcement.

All funds from the plate will go to help wildlife management.

If you would like to purchase a loon plate, you have until Nov. 30 to do so before the switch is made. You can purchase a plate by mail, fax or complete the wildlife habitate license plate order form.
