DETROIT (WXYZ) — Half a dozen families living in one Detroit neighborhood reached out to 7 Action News for help Monday. Our Simon Shaykhet answered the call and visited the New Center area, where he confirmed the heat in several homes was not working.

Many of them living on West Philadelphia near the Lodge Freeway were using space heaters, and extra blankets.

“We went to bed with no heat," said homeowner Margaret Singleton. "We were freezing. I cannot take this anymore. It’s happened 4 times. I cannot be without heat with my daughter."

Singleton explained that the cause of the trouble was water getting into underground gas lines being fueled by DTE Energy. We immediately reached out to the company for help, and were told they were working on a solution. The help was desperately needed according to Singleton who said, “When I came home from church the gas was off, and I told them they have to come out and redo it.”

Soon after, DTE called us back to say they had made all necessary repairs after the outage that families say lasted two days. DTE says this time, the heat should be fixed for good. We’ll stay on top of this to make sure that remains the case.
