They were your typical tourists visiting the Statue of Liberty on the Fourth of July. For Millan and Amaan Lam of Rochester Hills, this was their first trip to New York City.

Planned protesters were also at the statue with a banner that read: “Abolish ICE” to protest President Trump's handling of immigrants coming into the U. S. across the Mexican border and some 2,000 kids separated from their parents.

One of the protesters decided to climb the statue to the base and ignored police when they told her to come down.

Officials evacuated the crowd from the statue.  Tamanna Lam took pictures before and as they were leaving.  They didn’t know for sure what was happening as it was unfolding.  She tells 7 Action News they have no regrets because it was a great experience.
