The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning consumers about a papaya recall that may be linked to a salmonella outbreak.

An investigation is underway after multiple Salmonella illnesses were reported across the U.S.

The recall affects Caribena brand Maradol papayas from the company, Grande Produce. The company did inform the FDA of the recall, but has not issued a public statement to notify consumers.

Consumers who have this brand of papaya are asked to dispose of them.

So far, there have been 47 cases of illness, 12 hospitalizations and one death in connection to the salmonella outbreak.

Symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

If you think you have become ill after eating possible contaminated papayas, consult your doctor.
