FERNDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) — Ferndale police investigating after 30 reports of thefts from unlocked cars and one home invasion in the last week.
Police in Ferndale are trying to figure out who's behind a spike in car thefts around the city.
They say it's a crime of opportunity because people are leaving their doors unlocked. They've received around 30 reports of thefts from unlocked cars in the last week. Police say it's been happening after 11 p.m. and before 7 a.m.
Investigators say everything from spare change, laptop computers, phone chargers and a gun have been taken from unlocked cars. Someone even left their pickup truck running and in a matter of moments, someone on a bike took notice and took off with the pickup truck.
"It's really on us to make sure doors are locked," said Sgt. Baron Brown with the Ferndale Police Department. "Make it part of your routine."
