A fire at a substation at 8 Mile and Prest on Detroit's west side caused a power outage for nearby residents and businesses.

The fire also closed down a stretch of 8 Mile near Greenfield to allow firefighters to contain the flames.

According to DTE, it was a small fire in a cable line that feeds the substation. Officials say heat could be a factor in the cause of the fire. A spokesperson said, "In extreme temperatures, our equipment is more susceptible to issues."

In order to put out the fire, operators had to cut all the power to the substation, affecting nearly 5,000 people.

About 25 children from a nearby nursery school had to be evacuated, according to Detroit Fire. A DDOT bus was brought over to keep the kids cool.

The official cause of the fire and power restoration time are still unknown.
