TAYLOR (WXYZ) — A fire nearly destroyed West Mound Church Monday. The building was built in 1882, and officials say the age of the building, along with environmental factors, resulted in significant damage to the building. However, fire officials say the structure of the building is still sound.
The Taylor fire captain told 7 Action News that firefighters fought to make sure the fire didn't spread to other buildings in the area.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The building, which is located in Heritage Park, has undergone many renovations over recent years. The church was currently getting a new porch.
According to a Facebook post by the City of Taylor, the church was originally built by German settlers on what's now Eureka Road, across from Southland Center.
The building was donated to the city and moved to Heritage Park in 1994, and is now part of the Coan Lake Historical area of the park.
A wedding was held at the church just days before the blaze.
