(WXYZ) — The Farmington Hills Fire Department said a fire safety plan after a school assembly helped a family get out of an apartment fire safely.

According to the department, firefighters were dispatched to the Echo Valley Apartments on Nov. 14, and fortunately, a fire engine and two firefighters were already across the street for smoke alarm installation when it broke out.

When they got the call, the firefighters looked out the window and saw the fire, immediately responding.

It’s not uncommon to see our firefighters performing fire prevention efforts while on duty,” said Farmington Hills Fire Marshal Jason Baloga. “When they got the call, firefighters looked out the window of the residence where they were installing a smoke alarm and saw a fire in the apartment right across the street.”

According to the department, the family had recently reviewed the National Fire Protection Agency's home fire escape plan and checklist the child brought home after the department's fall assembly program at Kenbrook Elementary.

That information helped the family escape quickly and safely before calling 911.

According to the department, they have reached over 3,500 Farmington Public School students with their program
