Tens of thousands of people from across the world will converge on Detroit for the FIRST Championship at Cobo Center this week.

The 4-day event will feature robotics championships at Cobo Center beginning Wednesday and concluding Saturday.

FIRST, according to the website, helps inspire young people to be science and technology leaders in the world.

In all, there will be more than 15,000 students in grades K-12 from 25 states and 45 countries, along with their custom-built robots. Those robots will compete in timed matches, making adjustments on the fly in racecar-like pits.

On top of that, tens of thousands of friends, mentors, parents, coaches and more will be at the vent.

It's the first time the FIRST Championship has come to Detroit, and it will be here through at least 2020, expected to bring around $30 million annually to the state.

Events begin Wednesday with set up and conclude on Saturday with the final rounds of the FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Tech Challenge.

All of the FIRST Championship can be streamed live, including real-time matches at firstchampionship.org/watch-live.
