A man from Flint was pronounced dead from self-inflicted injuries while being housed at the Sanilac County Jail.

Stephen Vance Shimmel, 47, was placed in a single occupant cell and was found hanging in the corner of the cell.

Corrections deputies freed him and began live-saving efforts, performing CPR until turning him over to EMS personnel who continues, but the efforts were not able to revive him.

"We are saddened by this unfortunate incident and offer our condolences to the family," said Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki. "We are working diligently to answer the family's questions with transparency to bring them closure."

Shimmel was arraigned Tuesday with Preston Jack for a home invasion that left two men dead.

The men were charged for robbing a medical marijuana growing operation in Greenleaf Township.
