(WXYZ) — The Ford plant in Valencia, Spain, has shut down after three employees tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) within a 24-hour span, a spokesman for the automotive company said Sunday.

"We are taking quick action to follow the established protocol, including the identification and self-isolation of all employees who had close contact with the affected workers," the spokesman said. "We will take all other appropriate steps to ensure that risk from this situation is minimized."

The plant was already scheduled to have three non-production days between Wednesday, March 18 and Friday, March 20. With confirmation of the three COVID-19 cases, the company decided to just close the plant for the entire week, starting Monday, March 16.

The situation will be monitored closely to determine next steps. A meeting with the unions will continue on Monday, where details on the matter will be further discussed.
