(WXYZ) — Most parents have the same concern: making sure their young drivers return home safely.
This fall, metro Detroit parents can take advantage of an opportunity to enhance the safety of their teen drivers – and it's free.
Robbie Buhl, a former IndyCar driver founded Teen Street Skills – a free, Detroit-based community program that educates and improves new drivers.
Teens ages 15-21 with a legal driving permit can enroll now in any of the 10 morning or afternoon sessions spanning three weekends in October and November:
- Sunday , October 13 (Morning: 8:30a - 12:00p; Afternoon: 1:00p - 4:30p)
- Saturday, October 19 (Morning: 8:30a - 12:00p; Afternoon: 1:00p - 4:30p)
- Sunday, October 20 (Morning: 8:30a - 12:00p; Afternoon: 1:00p - 4:30p)
- Saturday, November 9 (Morning: 8:30a - 12:00p; Afternoon: 1:00p - 4:30p)
- Sunday, November 10 (Morning: 8:30a - 12:00p; Afternoon: 1:00p - 4:30p)
Located at a closed-course track adjacent to the famed Michigan Central Depot in the historic Corktown neighborhood, the interactive, ½ day program covers:
- Driving basics, defensive driving behavior
- Skid control
- Emergency braking, accident avoidance
- Interacting with law enforcement
- Car knowledge 2.0
- Distracted driving
The course is available to drivers aged 15-21 who have a legal driving permit.
