MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — Former Macomb County Commissioner Sal Rocca has died from COVID-19. Rocca's passing was announced Wednesday during a board of commissioners meeting. He was 74.

“He was a political maverick,” said Commissioner Don Brown. “He truly broke the mold.”

Sal was a resident of Sterling Heights, and served on the board of commissioners between 1995 and 2000. He also served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2004, and also between 1974 and 1980, and from 1982 to 1994.

His wife Sue wanted the public to know specifically that Sal had died from the coronavirus, so they would understand the seriousness of the virus, a release states.

“He was dedicated to public service,” said his wife Sue Rocca, who was also a Macomb County Commissioner and state legislator.
