Former Michigan State University basketball star Keith Appling was sentenced Thursday in Wayne County.

A judge ordered that Appling serve 5 years probation which includes serving one year in the Wayne County jail for carrying a concealed weapon and assaulting, obstructing or resisting arrest.

Appling pleaded guilty to the charges in connection to a traffic stop that took place in August of 2016.

Appling was pulled over at Russell and E. Seven Mile. After initially stopping in his 2013 blue Dodge Challenger, police say he fled and tossed a handgun out the window.

His attorney requested work release for Appling who is employed at the Joe Dumars Center.

The judge had no objection to granting work release.

During sentencing, Appling addressed the court.

“I am extremely disappointed in myself, and I know I let a lot of people down especially my community and kids who look up to me.”

He told the judge he just wants to set his life straight.

“I know I made some my mistakes, but I definitely learned from them. And I’m just ready to get my life back on track. And once all of this is resolved, your honor I promise you that you will never see my face in a court room ever again.”
