PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — Former Pontiac Mayor Willie Payne died on Thursday at the age of 64, the city announced on Friday.
Payne died at his home, and was a 20-year veteran of the Pontiac police force.
He was also an author of a children's book called "My Friend the Policeman," which showed the commonalities between police and their families and the families of the people they serve.
According to the city, Payne will have a public memorial in Pontiac, but his funeral will take place in his home state of Louisiana.
