(WXYZ) — A former teacher convicted of trying to trade grades for sex will spend three month in jail, followed by five years on probation.

Charles Penn will also have to register as a sex offender.

Prosecutors say the 41-year-old Penn offered better grades to a 15-year-old student in exchange for sexual favors.

The incident occurred last year while he was working as an economics teacher at Harper Woods High School.

The student said Penn made the offer after she asked him how she could improve the "D" she received. Another student overheard the conversation.
