Martin Luther King Day celebrations in metro Detroit

(WXYZ) — Many celebrations across metro Detroit will be held on Martin Luther King Day in honor of the civil rights leader.

Ann Arbor

Activist Angela Davis will speak at the 34th Annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium. The event will be held at 10 a.m. in Hill Auditorium.

Auburn Hills

"Assessing the Dream: A Progress Report" to be held at WMU-Cooley's Auburn Hills campus. Events begin at 10 a.m., featuring a brunch and a presentation with attorneys and WMU-Cooley graduates.

Canton

A civil rights inspired concert will be held at the Village Theater in Canton at 7 p.m. It will feature hip hop artist Shaun Boothe. Tickets are $15 each and can be bought online here.

Dearborn

Dearborn Public Schools will hold their MLK Day of Service. The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. at the Islamic Center of America and will feature Rep. Debbie Dingell, State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud and Wayne County Commissioner Sam Baydoun. Sign up for the event here.

Detroit

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is holding its MLK Day 2020 celebration. A breakfast and keynote address will be held. The celebration will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the website here.

Detroit's 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Rally and March will be held at noon in the St. Mathew's-St. Joseph's Episcopal Church. The event will feature

The Detroit Historical Museum will hold its "Beyond the Dream" event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program will feature performances and workshops. Program admission for MLK activities is free for the day. To register, click here.

The Let Freedom Ring Awards honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will be held at the historic Fox Theatre at 7 p.m. and will be hosted by civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson.

The Motown Museum will offer free admission to those 17 years and younger on MLK Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The celebration will include special performances and giveaways.

Wayne State University Annual Board Up Event in Southwest Detroit. Volunteers will be working on canvassing, cleaning, securing vacant and open homes, and installing Safe Routes signs. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided to volunteers. Sign up to volunteer here.

Lathrup Village

The celebration will feature a free MLK movie at noon and a program from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will be held at the Lathrup Village Community Room.

Redford

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.community prayer breakfast at Thurston High School at 7 a.m. There will be round-table discussions followed by packing lunches for St. Aloysius in Detroit. The event is $10 and all proceeds to to support the Redford Interfaith Relief Food and Clothing Pantry.

Rochester

Keeper of the Dream event at Oakland University. The scholarship event begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Oakland Center Student Union and will feature a keynote address from Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie.

Romulus

Annual Romulus community Martin Luther King Day celebration. It will begin at 8 a.m. with a march from Romulus Middle School to Romulus High School. After, breakfast will be served at 9:30 in the high school auditorium. All are welcome to attend.

Southfield

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Peace Walk Celebration. The walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, followed by an 11 am. program at the Southfield Pavilion, featuring performances and special presentations. For more information, click here.

The 21st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration will take place at Walled Lake Northern High School starting at 5 p.m. Events include a multicultural dinner

Westland

Wrong Conviction Community Forum at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church. Guest speakers include Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, Councilwoman Tasha Green, Aaron Salter, George Hunter and families still fighting for their loved ones.
