Traffic, parking could be a mess Sunday in Detroit due to Lions game, Freep Marathon

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Two major events are happening this Sunday in downtown Detroit, which could cause headaches when it comes to traffic and parking. The Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon and the Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings are both scheduled on Sunday.

While the Lions game doesn't start until 1 p.m., there are major traffic closures and restrictions due to the marathon. There are about 25,000 people participating in the marathon and Ford Field holds 65,000 people, and with spectators, it's expected that more than 100,000 people will coverage on downtown Detroit.

The marathon starts at 7 a.m., and below you'll find some of the major closures affecting guests coming to Ford Field.

  • Detroit-Windsor Tunnel closed 6:45 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Lodge Freeway southbound closed at I-75 from 3 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
  • I-375 ramp to Lafayette open, but service drive closed from Lafayette to Congress from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • I-375 southbound Jefferson St. east and west exits closed 6 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.
  • Fort St. and Michigan Ave. various road closures from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Plus, I-94 is closed between I-96 and Livernois this weekend due to construction
  • Also, the Ambassador Bridge will have restricted traffic from 5:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Fans are encouraged to use Waze to get alternate routes to Ford Field on game day.

For parking, the Lions are telling people to get there early, as some people for the marathon will begin arriving around or before 5 a.m. Plus, road closures begin at 3 a.m. in some areas.
