SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Gorman's Home Furnishings & Interior Design announced that it is closing down its Shelby Township showroom.

The 80-year-old retailer says it was unable to reach mutually agreeable lease terms with the landlord of its Lakeside showroom.

Additionally, the company announced that it has finalized a complete renovation of its Troy showroom.

“This is a lease issue and nothing more. Gorman’s is in the best financial position of its 80-year existence. Our real estate is mostly owned and we carry no debt, but we’re closely assessing the terms of our leased properties. We are a very strong organization and expect to be around to serve our customers for a very long time,” said Tom Lias, Gorman’s Home Furnishings president and CEO.

The Lakeside store closed for liquidation sale preparation of more than $5 million in inventory on Friday, June 19. A special invitation-only sale for Gorman’s customers will follow from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26.

The store will open to the general public Saturday, June 27, and will sell to the bare walls, owners said. Discount pricing is expected to range from 40 percent to 75 percent off of retail pricing.

“We started doing a deep dive into our data and discovered what we believe Nordstrom also learned about its customer base. Many of our Lakeside customers were our Troy customers, too,” Lias said. “That doesn’t mean an additional store in southeast Michigan is off the table. We haven’t ruled anything out just yet.”

Nordstrom’s closed its Clinton Township store at The Mall at Partridge Creek in September 2019.

No layoffs are expected as a result of the Lakeside store closure.

Additionally, the Troy showroom has undergone a $200,000 renovation.

“What was okay in retail ten or fifteen years ago is not okay today. We’re leading necessary change to meet our customers’ evolving tastes and needs, while ensuring they receive the absolute best in merchandise and design talent available,” Lias said. “We want to continue to be a destination retailer and we’re continually innovating to deliver the experiences they want and deserve.”
