LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) — Michigan is continuing to see a record number of cases and hospitalizations, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on Thursday.

She said Michiganders need to do everything they can do to slow the spread of the virus.

She said the number of cases per million since the State Supreme Court struck down her powers has been dramatically on the rise.

Whitmer doubled down on the importance of masks, saying she's asking the state Legislature to pass legislation requiring them to wear masks in indoor places. Although this is currently under effect under epidemic orders, Whitmer said it would "be helpful" if a mandate was codified in the Republican-majority Legislature.

"Something this important deserves the legislature’s stamp of approval," Whitmer said. "It will send a resounding message that every one of us will have to do our part."
