DETROIT (WXYZ) — Kyron’s Grant Me Hope video first aired on WXYZ 7 Action News on July 11, 2015.

“I am a 16-year-old, and I want to be adopted because I want to say ‘Mom,’” you hear Kyron say at the beginning.

Luckily, a family in Michigan eventually saw the video and wanted to connect.

“I watch [the video] and it’s this boy who says he just wants a home, and he likes to bowl and play video games, and then he looks at the camera and says ‘I just want a Mom,’” recalled Christie Dishaw.

One of the reasons? Kyron is hearing impaired, and the family knows sign language to communicate with one of their other children who is deaf.

“We wanted to say ‘yes’ to people others couldn’t say ‘yes’ to,” explained Jay Dishaw.

Once they met Kyron in person, they knew it was meant to be. The Dishaws started the adoption process – that can take months.

They were concerned because Kyron turned 17 and would age out of the system at 18.

“They expedited the case because he was turning 18,” said Christie.

They adopted him just before his 18th birthday.

He’s now 21 and living with them in their new home in another state. He’s proud to have a job at a restaurant and be able to make some money.

The WXYZ staff is thrilled to share this update.

For privacy reasons, we typically do not hear what happens to the children we highlight from the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange website.

But the family wanted to share their story with Grant Me Hope – the non-profit based in west Michigan that produces the foster child videos.

WXYZ has partnered with Grant Me Hope since April of 2015 to air these videos as a public service to help children in foster care connect with families who are ready to adopt.

Our station airs the videos every Thursday on 7 Action News at Noon and every Sunday morning.
