Grosse Pointe Theatre will kick off the New Year with the entertaining romantic comedy Guys and Dolls, with nine performances Jan. 10-19.

The story takes place in the 1950's in New York City. The smooth-talking gambler, Sky Masterson, played by Zak Shugart of Troy, makes a bet that he can win over a certain doll, Sarah Brown of the Save-a-Soul Mission, played by Megan Welenc of Rochester Hills, and convince her to have dinner with him in Havana, Cuba, in exchange for 12 "sinners" who will attend a prayer service at the mission. The bet is placed between Sky and gambler Nathan Detroit, played by Nick Marinello of St. Clair Shores, who feels he will win the bet since he believes Sarah Brown is not the type of doll who will go with Sky. Nathan, who is organizing a floating craps game, has been engaged to Adelaide, played by Catie Hauff of Richmond, for 14 years. Adelaide, a dancer at the Hot Box Nightclub, has always believed that Nathan can change his ways, settle down and leave the gambling behind. The twists and turns are comical and even poignant, showing when love is involved, anything is possible.
