An Ann Arbor family was awoken early Monday morning to find a gun-toting stranger in his underwear standing in their kitchen.

Christopher Joseph Erney was charged today with felonious assault and unlawful entry.

In a statement, police said they were called to the 600 block of S. Main Street on a report of a man with a handgun who had broken into an apartment on the 6th floor.

The victim, an 18-year-old girl, told police she was startled by a loud noise around 4 am.

"Some guy just broke my door down and like shot a bunch of shots down my hallway," the victim told 911.

When she went into the kitchen, she found Erney, standing in his underwear, gun in hand, yelling and “extremely angry, confused and delusional,” she told police.

The girl’s father arrived seconds later and told police he feared they would be shot.

"You could totally tell he was delusional and than he goes, 'I'm in the wrong place, he had the gun pointed at me, and then he turned around and left," said the girl's father, Kerry Kerch.

Suddenly, Erney told them both he was in the wrong apartment and left. Police arrested him in the hallway on another floor.

Police said Erney lives on the first floor of the building – and he did not know the people in the apartment that he broke into. When officers arrested Erney, in addition to a handgun, they also recovered a rifle.

The loud noises the victims heard was Erney breaking into the home.

Erney was charged with unlawful entry and felonious assault.
