The Hamtramck Police Department K-9 unit has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to charitable donations.

The non-profit organization, Vested Interest in K-9s, made the donation. The organization's mission is to "provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement...throughout the United States."

New K-9 graduates and K-9s with expired vests all at least 20 months of age are eligible to participate in their program.

The donation to provide one protective vest for an active K-9 is $950. Vests on average weigh about 4-5 pounds.
