Flint households with either children or senior age 60 and older may be eligible for new water heaters, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The Health Department has partnered with the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department (GCCARD) to provide $1.2 million for water heater replacement.

The replacements have been made available through a grant program for low-income homes.

To be eligible, "households must have an income of up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level and have at least one child under age 18."

$900,000 will be used to replace 425 water heaters for TANF-eligible homes belonging to Flint water system residents. $300,000 will replace 150 water heaters in senior homes in Flint.

Those who meet the eligibility requirements and are interested in a replacement, should call the GCCARD at (810) 787-0199.
