British researchers found children whose fathers positively interacted with them when they were 3-months-old, had higher scores on cognitive tests when they were 2-years-old.

The children not only had enhanced thinking skills, they had better attention, language, problem-solving and social skills.

The researchers noted two factors had the most positive effect. Dads who were sensitive and calm, and who spent quality time with their kids. They played with them and gave positive feedback.

This study doesn’t prove a cause and effect, just because you have an attentive Dad doesn’t mean you’ll have a brighter kid. But it certainly highlights the importance of having a father figure in a child’s life.

My prescriptions:

  • Dads should be involved with their child starting right at birth. It may not seem like you’re having an impact when they’re that young, but this research suggests you are.
  • Read with your child at every age. It’s linked to greater boosts in their thinking skills.
  • Set aside time for playtime daily. Great ways to interact with your little one include taking walks, making silly faces, and daddy dance parties.
  • Always share positive emotions and encouragement.  Even when your baby is unhappy, a Dad’s deeper voice can be calming and soothing.

In this particular study, it did not matter if the child was a boy or girl.

However another study found a father’s involvement in his daughter’s life affected her self-esteem and satisfaction when she was an adult.

It all boils down to an active involved Dad can positively affects his children’s life.
