As the world mourns the loss of Muhammad Ali, we're learning he died from septic shock following respiratory complications.

Sepsis can happen to anyone, but it is more common and a lot more dangerous in people who are very young or very old. There are over 1 million cases of sepsis in the U.S. every year.
