(WXYZ) — If you're turning 26 and preparing to get off your parents' healthcare plan, there are a few things you should be prepared for.

Molly McCoy, the director of sales and client services at Priority Health, said the first step is to make sure to find out when to enroll. Some plans will allow you to stay on until the end of the year, while others may remove you from the policy shortly after you turn 26.

McCoy also said there are three types of plans to choose from: health maintenance organization (HMO), preferred provider organization (PPO) and point-of-service (POS)>

Each plan is different and offers something for everyone.

"When buying a plan, always consider your personal health care needs. Do you need a plan that covers specific prescription drugs? Are you anticipating getting married or having a child in the near future? Any procedures or surgeries coming up?" McCoy said.

Finally, when it comes to buying health insurance, it depends on where you get it from. If it's an employer-based program, you should contact your HR department before your 26th birthday. If you plan to purchase a plan separately, you'll want to talk to an insurance agent or visit a health insurer's website for guidance.

"Purchasing a health insurance plan may be intimidating and overwhelming, but it’s an important step to take," McCoy added. "Do your research and make sure you’re signing up for a plan that satisfies your health physically, and financially."
