DETROIT (WXYZ) — A $32 million construction project to renovate a downtown Detroit skyscraper empty for nearly 40 years is almost complete. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will join others as they mark the return of the historic Metropolitan Building in downtown Detroit.
In August 2017, construction began on the Metropolitan Building, empty since 1979. The building is located on John R. between Woodward and Broadway.
Duggan will join The Roxbury Group, Means Group and other partners to celebrate the dedication. They'll light the exterior of the 93-year-old building and welcome guests into the Great Hall for the first time since it closed.
It will be home to the first Element Hotel, which is an extended-stay hotel under the Starwood Collection. It's expected the hotel will be open in time for the 2019 North American International Auto Show.
On top of that, there will be a rooftop restaurant and bar, ground-floor retail and dining, which is expected to open in early 2019.
The ceremony will kick off at 5 p.m. and WXYZ plans to live stream the event.
