Honolulu will become the first major U.S. city to ban texting while crossing the street today.

The new law says a person can't text or use things like gaming devices, laptops or tablets while crossing a street or highway.

The ban also covers pagers and digital cameras.

Police will make sure people know the new law for the first three months before they start writing tickets.

The tickets range from $15 to $35.
