MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Chair of the state House Appropriations Committee says that committee will hold hearings on the environmental contamination related to Electro-Plating Services in Madison Heights.

Rep. Shane Hernandez of Port Huron issued a statement saying the hearing would look into properties owned by Gary Sayers in both Madison Heights and Marion Township. The statement was issued following a 7 Action News reporton the Marion Township property.

The statement reads as follows:

I am outraged by this situation. First we hear about the green ooze on I-696, and now we see this alarming situation in Sanilac County. We spend hundreds of millions of dollars cleaning up the environment and protecting health. Citizens demand that their tax dollars are spent effectively to protect public health, and they expect the state to respond quickly and effectively any time public health may be jeopardized. It is my intent to ensure accountability so that happens.

As part of the process, the state House Appropriations Committee will schedule hearings into this issue. These hearings will focus on what state environmental quality officials knew about possible contamination, when they knew about it, and what was done in response.
