DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Detroit-based jewelry brand Rebel Nell makes necklaces, earrings, rings and key chains from fallen graffiti.

Now, they’ve teamed up with another brand to open their first retail shop this Thursday. Selling more merchandise helps the community.

The shop was just a pipe dream for Amy Peterson six years ago when she helped create Rebel Nell. The company takes Detroit graffiti and creates one of a kind pieces of jewelry.

You may remember last year, they teamed up with Ford to create a new collection using the graffiti from the Michigan Train Depot.

Rebel Nell’s jewelry is valuable, but we are not talking about precious metals.

“The sole reason we exist is to employ, educate and empower women with barriers to employment,” Peterson said.

Rebel Nell works with seven homeless shelters for women and helps them gain experience for better careers. The new store is on Holden Street near Lincoln Street.

“The vibe of this neighborhood really fits with our personality.”

They are sharing the space with York Project and like Rebel Nell, it is a company trying to do some good.

Founder Josh York explained, “They’re an incredible company with a great mission and we aspire to be like them.”

York Project sells clothing to raise money to make care packages for the homeless. Both brands make their merchandise in the store. They say shopping here is meant to be an experience.

York said, “Touch and feel the clothing that’s actually being made by people just like you.”

The goal for both companies is to keep growing while investing the profits back in the city.

Peterson added, “We’ve shipped to every single state so far and a lot of international orders.”
