Prisoners and their families will pay less for phone calls, the Michigan Department of Corrections announced Friday.

The department's contract negotiations with telecommunications provider GTL will reduce all call rates to 16 cents per minute.

Call rates used to be 20 cents per minute per prepaid calls, 21 cents per minute for debit calls and 25 cents per minute for collect calls.

The reduction is expected to save prisoners and their families about $7.5 million a year.

A $3 automated payment transaction fee associated with prepaid accounts will be eliminated as part of the contract.

The reduced rates will go into effect on Oct. 8.
