The American Academy of Pediatrics updated their guidelines about juice and babies for the first time in 16 years Monday morning.

According to the group's new policy, parents should not give children younger than one year old juice, unless it is specifically recommended by a doctor.

The previous guideline had stated children younger than six months old shouldn't drink juice.

The Academy said it decided to extend the guidelines through the first year because of rising obesity rates and growing concerns about cavities.

The group recommends a mother breastfeed her child until one year old or give the child formula instead of juice.
