Local chef's family caught in the eye of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas

(WXYZ) — Hurricane Dorian is having an impact on families in Detroit.

World-renowned chef Maxcel Hardy told 7 Action News some of his family is riding out the storm on the island nation of the Bahamas.

The island is confronted with a national catastrophe after Dorian unleashed massive amounts of flooding across the tiny island.

It's reported at least five people are dead.

The water reached roofs and tops of palm trees.

Chef Hardy shared video of the storm from his aunt during the brunt of the storm. It shows high winds and surging sea water that flooded neighborhoods.

Up next the hurricane takes aim at the eastern seaboard of the U.S. including Florida, North and South Carolina, and beyond.

Chef Hardy is planning relief efforts at local restaurants.
