(WXYZ) - Abdominal pain.
Punctured fallopian tubes.
These are just a few of the symptoms some women say they are dealing with because of a permanent birth control device called Essure.
"To me, it's almost like a death sentence," said Darlene Taylor, a mother of four from Detroit. Taylor is talking about Essure. Essure is comprised of small metal coils that a doctor implants into the fallopian tubes to block conception. It's marketed as being safer, less expensive, and less invasive than tubal ligation, commonly known as having your tubes tied.
Taylor said she had to have one of her coils surgically removed, and says the other one has lodged into the muscles of her abdomen.
"It's completely destroyed my life. I used to be a very active mom -- playing football and such with my kids. I can't even laugh at their jokes or sneeze without feeling it stab me. When it stabs me I can bleed for up to 30 days sometimes longer and I often wonder how I'm still alive, bleeding so much," said Taylor.
Taylor is not alone. Thousands of women have taken to Facebook to share their Essure stories. And hundreds have complained to the Food and Drug Administration. Several local women have come forward to 7 Action News Investigator Heather Catallo. You can see her full investigation Thursday on 7 Action News at 11, after Scandal.
