A Michigan State trooper that caused a vehicle accident and later tried to cover it up has agreed to a 15-day suspension.

The discipline was issued on November 7, but was not revealed until this week when the Michigan State Police fulfilled a public records request seeking the information.  Initially, MSP resisted releasing the information to WXYZ at all, saying that it would be improper to do so.

In May, Trooper Kevin Klomparens was backing into a parking space at a Chipotle restaurant in Southfield when he accidentally struck a parked vehicle, causing hundreds of dollars in damage.  Klomparens didn't report the accident and fled the scene.

When he learned that the accident was witnessed, Klomparens used his police radio to report that he was the victim of a hit and run accident and was in pursuit of the vehicle responsible.  Eventually, Klomparens admitted he made that accident up.

On November 7, Klomparens agreed to serve a 15 day unpaid suspension and to be transferred form the MSP Oak Park post to the Lansing Post.

Earlier this year, Attorney General Bill Schuette's office declined to charge Klomparens with anything related to the accident.
