An 8th grade student at Imlay City Middle School will be competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the second consecutive year.

John Ciurla has won every spelling bee in school since the fifth grade and now he is competing on a national level, which is something he takes very seriously.

"I have my mom quiz me on the words and I'm using a book that helps me with root words and how languages spell different sounds," says 14-year-old John.

"We couldn't be more proud. We're all behind John and he's represented us very well. Great kid, very quiet, unassuming, very studious," adds his principal Pat Brown.
