In one state, the men and women in blue are going green.

The Los Angeles Police Department is supping up its fleet with pure electric vehicles, according to a news release

One hundred BMW i3 cars will now be part of the team. The i3 reportedly gets about 80 miles on a single charge.

The electric car addition makes Los Angeles the city with the biggest EV collection in the United States.  L.A. will now use 168 battery powered vehicles in its municipal fleet.

By leasing and not buying the vehicles, the police department says they will have the money to  install 104 charging stations and four super chargers that can restore a vehicle's full charge in less than an hour.

“Electric vehicle procurement made sense for taxpayers and for the environment,” said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck in a news release

The new fleet of EVs expected to be used mainly by civilian workers and officers for non emergency assignments.
