MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 27-year-old man is accused of killing and torturing his roommate's 10-pound dog, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Andrea Biondo was arrested and charged with second-degree killing and torturing of an animal, and being in possession of controlled substances.

On Oct. 30 at 3 p.m., sheriff's deputies arrived at a residence on Sabrina Dr. for an animal cruelty complaint. A woman reported her Havanese dog "Nella" missing and believed foul play was involved due to there being a damaged dog crate, hair, feces and blood left in various areas of the home.

The woman told investigators that she placed Nella in her crate when she left in the morning and returned hours later to find the dog missing. She told police that Biondo, who also lived in the home, was the only one there during the time the foul play was suspected.

Surveillance video, which was given to investigators, showed Biondo carrying Nella by her neck out of the home. Police say the footage also showed him placing a hammer and a backpack into his vehicle before leaving.

When Biondo returned home, police arrested him. He was later found in possession of heroin and Suboxone.

Investigators say Biondo confessed to harming the dog, but said the dog ran away. Nella has since not been located.

“This type of brutality towards animals is exactly why we started our Task Force, P.A.W.S.” said Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith. “Our Office has authorized the most serious charges against this defendant, and
will do everything in our power to ensure justice for Nella.”

Biodo was given a $20,000 bond and is scheduled back in court on Nov. 7.
