A Shelby Twp. man is in the hospital after a two-hour long stand off with police.
Investigators say he was armed with butcher knives and making violent threats.

We’re told it began around 5 a.m. at the Roma Valley Apartments, off Shelby Rd. near 22 Mile.

Police tell us a 38 year old man, with a history of mental health issues, armed himself with butcher knives and broke into his parents apartment.

"I came to look through the peep hole and I just heard him yelling and going crazy and holding two knives in his hand,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.

Investigators say his parents were not at home, they were at the Shelby Twp. Police Station to report their son was making threats.
When police got to the complex, he had already broken in.

He refused to follow police orders and the stand off began.

Shelby Twp. Deputy Chief Mark Coil said the man became violent, throwing items police from the second story apartment unit.

"He engaged our officers several times from the balcony, throwing items, plates, debris.”

The building, with eight units inside was evacuated after the suspect threatened to burn it down.

The suspect surrendered to police about two hours after the stand off began.
Police say he was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.

"It's really a statement about mental, this is a mental health issue. It's a young man who is suffering from some mental health issues,” said Coil.

The Macomb Co. Prosecutor will decide if any charges will be filed.

His parents declined to speak with Seven Action News.

Investigators say Michigan State Police and the Macomb Co. Sheriff's Office helped bring this to a peaceful end.
