LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A suspect has been arrested in connection with a bomb threat telephoned to the Michigan Capitol building, state police announced Thursday.

The Charlotte man allegedly told a control operator at the Capitol complex that everyone needed to evacuate because the building was going to explode. The operator reported the threat to authorities. State police cleared employees to return after conducting a sweep.

The suspect was arrested outside his residence without incident by the MSP Emergency Support Team and Fugitive Team. He is being held at the Lansing City Jail pending charges that may be filed Friday, authorities said.

The call came a day after a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the presidential election.

Lawmakers are not convening until next week. Legislative leaders and some other legislators have offices in the statehouse. The building is closed to the public except during session days due to coronavirus restrictions.
