SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man who was charged with operating while intoxicated was for being "super drunk" at his court hearing last week.

According to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, James Gird was in Shelby Township court on Feb. t for a hearing relating to an OWI charge on Dec. 30, 2019.

Magistrate James A. Verploeg noticed Gird had concerning behavior and ordered a test to be administered, according to the prosecutor's office.

They alleged that Gird had a difficult time carrying on a conversation without slurring and also failed field sobriety tests. When he was tested, prosecutors found he had a BAC of almost 4 times the legal limit.

According to the prosecutor's office, Gird also admitted to have a "couple" shots and they found a partly-empty bottle of vodka in his car.

“Clearly this defendant has a real issue with alcohol and it must be addressed before an innocent person is seriously harmed,” Smith said in a release. “We will hold those who drink and drive accountable, whether it is on our roads or even in a court parking lot.”

Gird was arraigned and given a $25,000 bond on Friday.
