TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man whose license had been suspended 24 times, and with active warrants for his arrest was stopped for a traffic violation in Troy. During the encounter with police, the man allegedly aggressively pushed an officer and attempted to flee. He's now facing several charges.
Jalen Smith, 26, of Detroit, was on Big Beaver Road, just west of Dequindre Road, on Dec. 28 when he was stopped by Troy officers for an out tail light.
Smith was in a burgundy 2007 Chevrolet Uplander, which is in his grandmother's name.
During the traffic stop, Smith admitted to officers that his driver's license had been suspended and that he had current warrants. Police found that Smith's license had been suspended over a dozen times and that he had 11 active warrants for his arrest.
When Smith was asked to exit his vehicle by officers, he complied, but then pushed an officer to the ground after pleading to not be arrested. Smith then fled westbound on foot, then southbound before jumping a wall to run into a subdivision in the area.
It was a passerby who alerted officers on the search of Smith's location. Troy police officers were able to locate Smith and arrest him.
On top of his current warrants, Smith now faces a charge of resisting and obstructing a police officer and driving with a suspended license.
