Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is expanding an effort to put teens to work this summer.
This program, Grow Detroit's Young Talent, is aimed at keeping kids off the streets.
In its first year, more than 5,500 teens and young adults were employed during the summer. This year, the goal is higher. Duggan issued a challenge to businesses in the city to put 8,000 Detroit youth to work.
People 14 to 24 can apply.
"Last year, this community came together in a very powerful way to let our young people know how much they matter to us," Mayor Duggan stated in a press release. "The work, training and networking opportunities these young people have been able to experience will stay with them for the rest of their lives."
The first round of enrollment fairs will start this weekend at East Lake Baptist Church and Triumph Church. At the events, Detroit youth can ask questions and apply online.
